Culloden

A battle between the british army and highlanders took place here in on April 16, 1746. The goal of the army was the systematic extermination of the highlanders and their way of life. The army was successful. This place is creepy.

The battle ground is basically just marshy brush. This is one of the nicer patches.

Cottage adjacent to the battle field. It has been restored by the Scottish Trust.

Spiders and spider art was everywhere.

Mostly St. Andrew's

Tayside Bridge in Dundee
It was a really sunny day, everywhere but here.

Gummy Bear in St. Andrew's
This is a trash bin for your used gum.

Ruins of St. Andrew's Cathedral
Some of the stones for this Cathedral were stripped and used in other buildings.

Mostly Buildings

Entrance to Stirling Highland Hotel
This posh hotel was converted from an old high school. I thought the entrance was interesting because of the strong astrologcial (and hence non-christian) theme. I think this is consistent spritualism/mysticism movements of the Victorian era.

Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh
I think this building is fantastic! The design is reminiscent of an ancient type of dwelling used in the highlands known as a Crannog. The building is very controversial because of its design and expense. It cost tax payers 430 million pounds to construct.

I have started work since my last post and things are going well. I really like my labmates. Here are some new piccies from our travels.

Playground in Glasgow
This is pretty much the most awesome playground I've ever seen. As fas as I could tell the playground is open to the public of all ages.

Drying Green in Glasgow
Before water was piped into homes laundry was done in communal washing houses. These poles were used in Victorian times for drying clothes. The sign says that they were used up until the 1970's.

Statue in front of the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art
This picture was taken after a successful outting for the Scottish Football Team. Only the 'hat' was there before the game.
